Netflix confirms ‘Extraction 3’ as second film becomes platform’s biggest premiere of 2023

Netflix has greenlit a third installment of the hit Extraction franchise, following the unprecedented success of Extraction 2. The film was released on June 16 and continues to top the charts on the platform, quickly becoming the biggest film premiere of 2023. Extraction 2 is directed by Sam Hargrave, written by Joe Russo, and stars Chris Hemsworth and Golshifteh Farahani. It is produced by Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Mike Larocca, Angela Russo-Otstot, Chris Hemsworth, Patrick Newall, Sam Hargrave, Eric Glitter, and Peter Schwerin.

In a livestreamed announcement on Netflix’s TUDUM on June 16, Hemsworth, who is also a producer of the franchise, confirmed that Tyler Rake will return for the new installment, which is also set to be directed by Sam Hargrave. 

“We wouldn’t be here without you,” Hemsworth said during the message. “So thank you, thank you so much... I know we’ve only just released Extraction 2, but is anyone interested in seeing more of Tyler Rake in the future? Well, guess what, because between us, we’re already talking about Extraction 3 thanks to the response.”

At AGBO, the excitement about the third Extraction installment is well underway. “We are grateful to Netflix for their unwavering partnership in creating this franchise that has connected audiences all across the globe.,” said Extraction 2 producer and AGBO Chief Creative  Officer Angela Russo-Otstot. “We can’t wait to tell more of Tyler Rake’s story, and in a third chapter that continues to cement a new standard in the action space.”

In Extraction 2, Hemsworth returns as Tyler Rake. After barely surviving the events of the first movie, the Australian black ops mercenary is tasked with another deadly mission: rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held. The sequel also introduces a dapper new character, Alcott (played by Irdis Elba), who arrives mysteriously to present Rake his new assignment.

Alcott, whose elusive boss has yet to be revealed, will reportedly reemerge in Extraction 3. “There’s a charisma and a sense of humor that Idris has in the film that I would love to expand upon in a third film,” Hemsworth told Netflix. 

In addition to seeing more of Alcott, fans can also expect that Tyler and Nik will be returning to carry out another dangerous commission—ostensibly assigned by Alcott’s boss. We can’t reveal any more details just yet, as the producing team heads into pre-production and hatches development plans.
