An Immersive Theatre Experience in Downtown LA

AGBO is once again partnering with Lobby Theatre to bring a special staged reading of Clare Barron’s Dance Nation, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama, to the stage. The event, titled Eat, Drink, DANCE NATION, will run for three nights from October 25-27, 2024, at AGBO’s Downtown LA campus. Building on the success of last year’s Is God Is performance, this collaboration marks the continuation of an exciting partnership that celebrates the intersection of Hollywood and live theater.

Last year’s Is God Is performance was a resounding success, kicking off AGBO and Lobby Theatre’s shared mission to integrate dramatic storytelling across mediums. This year’s Dance Nation will once again create an immersive experience, combining theatre with community engagement. Attendees can enjoy pre- and post-show drinks and food in a relaxed atmosphere designed to spark conversation and connect the arts community.

Dance Nation, directed by Robin Larsen, Lobby Theatre’s Founding Artistic Director, follows a competitive group of adolescent dancers—portrayed by adult women—on their quest to reach the national finals in Tampa, Florida. Known for its raw exploration of ambition, identity, and womanhood, Barron’s play offers a darkly humorous look at the challenges of growing up. The stellar cast includes Marin Hinkle, Justin Kirk, Charmaine Bingwa, and Jeanne Sakata.

“We’re thrilled to offer Los Angeles audiences their first taste of Clare Barron’s fearless, funny play,” said Larsen. “At a time when women’s rights have been rolled back in the U.S., we’re proud to be presenting a play that celebrates women.”

AGBO's Chief Creative Officer, Angela Russo-Otstot, expressed pride in the ongoing partnership, noting, "AGBO’s support for Lobby Theatre embodies our mission to uplift emerging voices and celebrate the creative spirit of our artist-driven campus."

The Dance Nation premiere is a continuation of AGBO and Lobby Theatre’s collaboration, a partnership that aims to elevate both emerging and established artists, providing a platform for bold and innovative storytelling in Los Angeles.
