Meet Joel Phillips, an Australian filmmaker whose journey from a small town in Lismore to the creative hub of Sydney is nothing short of inspiring.
Despite being miles from Hollywood —Joel is proof that you don’t need to be in Tinseltown to make a mark in the industry.
Joel’s journey into filmmaking is a blend of DIY ingenuity, relentless passion, and a love for the craft that began with borrowing a family friend’s video camera. But it’s his experience with AGBO’s No Sleep ‘til Film Fest that really pushed his creativity into overdrive.
Early Days: From Lismore to the World
Joel’s fascination with filmmaking started early. While other kids were kicking soccer balls, Joel was diving headfirst into theater, eventually moving behind the camera to learn how the magic happened. With no formal training and limited resources, he began making short films, editing them the old-school way—by splicing VHS tapes.
“I was always drawn to the behind-the-scenes,” Joel says. “Near my little town, there is a theme park called Warner Brothers Movie World. And I was obsessed with going there because it had the sound stages connected to the theme park. I didn't care about the theme park! I was just like, ‘What are they doing over the fence?’”
Fast forward a few years, and Joel was acting, directing, and producing his own short films, all while working on various Australian projects. Then, he stumbled upon AGBO’s 48-hour filmmaking challenge, No Sleep ‘til Film Fest.
Joel wasn’t new to the 48-hour filmmaking journey (or to being generally underslept). His experience began with "Race Around Lismore," a local competition that first propelled him into the industry and sharpened his skills in fast-paced, high-pressure filmmaking.
So when AGBO’s "No Sleep ‘til Film Fest" came along, Joel knew it was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. The festival is a grueling yet exhilarating challenge, where filmmakers have just 48 hours to write, shoot, and edit a short film. The event pushes participants to their creative limits, fostering an environment of collaboration, innovation, and raw storytelling. Despite a hectic schedule, Joel emphasized “The 48-hour deadline forces you to focus in a way that’s both terrifying and exhilarating, There’s something freeing about that kind of creative pressure.”
Joel’s entry into the festival—a genre-blending musical thriller—was a standout, not just for its creativity but for its bold execution within such a limited timeframe. His approach to the challenge was to take risks and embrace the chaos, a mindset that served him well as he crafted a unique story that grabbed attention and earned him 2nd place in the 2022 No Sleep ‘til Film Fest.
The Impact of No Sleep on Filmmaking
The festival wasn’t just a one-off for Joel; it was a creative exercise that has had lasting effects on his approach to filmmaking. The high-pressure environment of No Sleep ‘til Film Fest reminded him of the importance of deadlines and how they can drive creativity in ways that a more relaxed schedule might not, however the journey doesn’t come without challenges.
Joel says. “I didn’t really have a big team; I executed the whole thing solo... It’s a vulnerable place to create out of, but you learn so much about yourself and your process. You have to be economical with time—using three minutes to tell a little story teaches you to play with pace and tone. It’s an intense but rewarding experience.”

For anyone considering entering this year’s No Sleep ‘til Film Fest, Joel’s advice is simple: “Just go for it. Don’t overthink it. You’ll be amazed at what you can create when you’re racing against the clock.”
Looking Ahead: New Projects on the Horizon
Joel’s experience with No Sleep has kept his creative gears turning and earned him a spot in the AGBO Storytellers Collective [StoCo] where he continues to hone his craft and collaborate with other emerging filmmakers. While he continues to work on new projects, including a short film set in his hometown of Lismore, he’s always looking for the next opportunity to push his boundaries.
As this year’s No Sleep ‘til Film Fest approaches, Joel Phillips stands as a testament to what’s possible when passion meets pressure. From his small-town beginnings to the intense creative sprint of No Sleep, Joel proves that great stories can come from anywhere—and that sometimes, the best ideas are born in just 48 hours.
