Overview
PLOT
Act 1: Love, Loss, and Escape
College student Cherry falls in love with his classmate Emily, and their relationship quickly deepens. However, when Emily decides to leave for Montreal to continue her studies, Cherry is heartbroken. In a moment of desperation, he enlists in the Army as a medic, hoping to escape his pain. Just before leaving for basic training, Emily confesses that she, too, is in love with Cherry, and the two marry before his deployment.
Act 2: War, Addiction, and Desperation
During his two years in the Army, Cherry endures horrific experiences, including witnessing his friend Jimenez die from an IED explosion. Upon returning home, Cherry struggles with severe PTSD and begins abusing OxyContin to cope with his anxiety. Emily, unable to handle Cherry's growing addiction and her own frustration, starts taking the medication as well, and together they spiral into a destructive addiction, eventually turning to heroin. To fund their habit, Cherry begins robbing banks. When their drug dealer, Pills and Coke, warns Cherry that they owe his boss, Black, for drugs they consumed, Cherry's robberies become more frequent and reckless. Emily nearly dies from an overdose, pushing Cherry to the edge.
Act 3: Final Robbery and Redemption
Determined to settle his debt with Black, Cherry performs one last bank robbery. He kisses Emily goodbye and turns himself in to the police after getting high one final time. Cherry is arrested and sentenced to 14 years in prison. Over the course of his sentence, Cherry detoxes and slowly recovers. After serving his time, he is released on parole, and in a moment of hope and redemption, he finds Emily waiting for him outside the prison, ready to start anew.
