Avtandil

Dato Bakhtadze

Avtandil is Zurab and Davit’s beloved uncle.

No other Nagazi soldier comes close to having as much shared history with the two brothers. When the brothers and their parents arrived in Armenia as refugees escaping the Georgian civil war, it was Avtandil who took them all in. Arguably, it was also Avtandil who laid the foundation for the brothers’ rise as the powerful crime bosses they are today. Although Avtandil is intimately involved in the Nagazi crime syndicate as the head of operations, it could be said that he is the closest thing to a conscience for the brothers. Not that he isn’t willing to use violence when necessary, but when it’s clear that Zurab is on the ropes following their battle at the skyscraper in Vienna, Avtandil attempts to persuade his nephew to abandon his desire for vengeance so that they can live to fight another day. Desperate to free Zurab of his incandescent rage, Avtandil reads two verses from the Bible – “Fear not, for I’m with you.” And, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted.” Avtandil recounts that he once thought God took Zurab’s hearing so that God could whisper right into his ear but now Zurab only knows rage. Zurab responds to Avtandil’s plea with a bullet into his uncle’s chest. It’s an ignoble end to the one person who loved Zurab the most.
